Teenage Regression in Behavior

What looks like a regression in behavior to you is more like a new awakening on your puppy’s part. Seemingly overnight, your previously well-behaved and adoring pup has deteriorated into a wild child. His interactions with other dogs may have also deteriorated as he has practiced new ways of dealing with others.

Problem aggression and anxieties may develop during this time, but they also recede as your puppy finds his way. Spaying or neutering makes a huge difference in his behavior, lessening fighting, marking, and bullying among dogs.

Because he’s distracted by his adolescence, your puppy’s obedience skills may falter, and you’ll be required to use a stronger hand to control and redirect his behavior. This is the age when many Labs are relegated to the backyard because of their overly boisterous behavior.

Adolescence may last until your Lab is 2 or 3 years old. It may be small comfort to know he’ll get over it, but if you continue to work with your Lab, he’ll get through this period, and so will you.

Here are some of the behaviors you may see:

Shyness or fearfulness

Destructive, acting-out behavior to satisfy his endless energy

Housetraining relapse, marking

Aggression

Overexuberance

Bossy, rude, always testing the rules

Ignores your commands, distracted

No self-control or ability to resist temptation

Overprotective
